We all know when October rolls around that the kid excitabilities are about to kick into full gear. But there are lots of fun activities that also set the stage for quality learning and practice. For example, our friends from wordtorque have posted Engage with the Page lessons for younger kids Creepy Carrots (using the <-y> suffix) and FunnyBones (the bases <dark> and <fright> as well as compound words).

For your slightly older students, you might want to let them into the secrets of Harry Potter spell creation. Do they know that the author purposely used her knowledge of Latin to create the spell names? And what about the etymology of the character names? A quick Google search will point you in the right direction on that front.

Our 4th graders LOVED this Harry Potter spell matching activity, where they pair an etymology card with a spell effect, and then finally earn the spell names to check their guesses. You can split the cards into groups of seven and then different groups can trade with each other, or kids can play more than once. Warning: there is at least one unforgivable curse here, so judge your audience accordingly. 🧙‍♀️🪄
